When Your Son takes the Wheel

When my son came home recently and said he didn’t want to take drivers education because he knew the basics of driving I didn’t get upset.  I knew he didn’t have all the information he needed to drive competently in the traffic around our neighborhood, let alone on the busy highways and streets.  I insisted he take driving lessons, but he balked and said his friend was going to show him some things.  That really got me concerned and we talked about why that was not a good idea.

When Your Son takes the Wheel

Young people tend to be guided by magical thinking that nothing bad is going to happen to them.  Now I must admit, I prefer to think this way as well, but the reality is the odds favor one of my children being involved in an accident.  It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.  So when they do, I want them to remain calm, ask the pertinent questions, and exchange information without raging at each other.  So as an incentive, I promised him that latest version of a popular video game he loves as a reward for taking the classes.  That got a swift reaction.  Before I knew it, he had signed up for classes with a neighborhood company who picked him up and brought him back promptly.  In the meantime, I searched for and found Groupons for GameStop.  My children have been going there for years, so felt confident about my purchase, and carried on.  With each lesson,  I could see his confidence building and he even admitted that the classes covered way more than his friend could ever teach him.  He loved using the simulator which boosted his confidence.

By the time the classes were over, I could more clearly see the man my child would be in a few short years.  He grew 3 inches, and the last time I checked, he seemed to be speaking to a certain young lady several times a week.  Now when we talk about driving, he shared more facts and figures with me about teen driving and really seems ready to get out into the world.  And I have no doubt one of the first stops will be GameStop.
